GLIS DOI and Easy-SMTA
GGCE can be configured to mint accession DOIs using DOI Registration Service of the Global Information System (GLIS) of the ITPGRFA, and for automated reporting on SMTA distributions to Easy-SMTA.
Find out more about GLIS DOIs on ITPGRFA GLIS website.
GGCE uses test environments of ITGPRFA services by default to prevent unintentionally sending data to Easy-SMTA or GLIS production. See configuration instructions.
GGCE uses two separate categories of application settings: one for minting DOIs, and one for reporting to Easy-SMTA. Your configuration may use the same settings for both categories.
Minting DOIs
DOIs for accessions and inventories can easily be obtained from GLIS DOI Registration Service using GGCE. The Secretariat of the International Treaty provides DOI registration free-of-charge for the entire PGRFA community. The accession and inventory details pages offer the button Submit to GLIS which sends the data to GLIS, and retrieves the DOI assigned to this germplasm.
Do not submit to GLIS information on any material you wish to keep private.
Progenitor DOIs
A Progenitor DOI is the DOI assigned to the progenitor (the source material) of a current accession or inventory item.
For accessions, the genebank can assign a Progenitor DOI by adding a name to the accession and setting its category to Progenitor DOI (PROGDOI), ensuring it is marked as web-visible. This information is sent to GLIS to define the lineage of the material.
For inventories, the system automatically determines the progenitor DOI. It first checks the immediate parent inventory. If it has a DOI, that is used. If not, the system continues up the parent chain. If no parent inventory has a DOI, it falls back to the DOI of the associated accession.
These progenitor DOIs are used by the GLIS DOI Registration Service to correctly categorize the registration method, such as distinguishing between a primary collection and a derivative or variant.
Application settings
Your GGCE Adminstrator must register the following Application settings in the ITPGRFA_GLIS category to make this work:
| Category tag | Variable name | Description |
|---|---|---|
ITPGRFA_GLIS | username | Your organization's GLIS username |
ITPGRFA_GLIS | password | ... and password |
ITPGRFA_GLIS | pid | The PID is obtained from the Site of the accession or inventory |
Generating SMTA documents and reporting distribution
Automated reporting on distribution of material with SMTA to ITPGRFA's Easy-SMTA is available in the Distribution module. You can also generate SMTA PDF documents.
Application settings
Your GGCE Adminstrator must register the following Application settings in the ITPGRFA_EASYSMTA category to enable this feature:

ITPGRFA_EASYSMTA | password | ... and password |
ITPGRFA_EASYSMTA | pid | Your organization's permanent identifier (PID) in GLIS |
ITPGRFA_EASYSMTA | instituteName | The name of your organization |
ITPGRFA_EASYSMTA | instituteAddress | ... and address |
