accession

A distinct, uniquely identifiable sample of seeds representing a cultivar, breeding line or a population, which is maintained in storage for conservation and use.

collection

A group of germplasm accessions maintained for a specific purpose under defined conditions.

genebank

A centre for conserving genetic resources under suitable conditions to prolong their lives.

ex situ conservation

The conservation of biological diversity outside its natural habitat. In the case of plant genetic resources this may be in seed genebanks, in vitro genebanks, or as live collections in field genebanks. (cf. in situ conservation)

in situ conservation

A conservation method that attempts to preserve the genetic integrity of gene resources by conserving them within the evolutionary dynamic ecosystems of the original habitat or natural environment. (cf. ex situ conservation)
