Barcodes

GGCE is designed to work seamlessly with barcodes and scanners; however, if a scanner is not available, you can still enter the barcode manually.

Searching by barcode without a scanner

If you do not have a scanner, you can input an existing inventory barcode directly into the system. The following image is a partial screen image of inventory data. In this example, an inventory item that has been assigned to the barcode I:3818 can be located by entering this code into the search or filter form.

Barcode property

What's in a barcode?

The barcode of an inventory item does not necessarily use the default I:{id} form. Some genebanks use UUIDs, while others have migrated their existing barcoding system to GGCE. Regardless of the format, every barcode is unique across all germplasm records.

When searching in an inventory list, the inventory barcode can be manually entered in the filter form to locate the desired inventory.

tip

GGCE allows use of a mobile phone or computer camera to scan the barcodes for filtering!

Adding a barcode

If an inventory item does not yet have an assigned barcode, you can create one by clicking the Assign barcode button.

Assigning barcode to germplasm

Notice that the barcode text, such as I:3388 in this example, is also displayed. This text can be entered manually when a scanner is not conveniently available.
