Barcodes

GGCE has been designed to work with barcodes and scanners; however, if a scanner is not available, the user can input the respective code.

Searching by barcode when a scanner is not available

When a scanner is not available the user can input an existing inventory barcode, as shown in the following example. This following is a partial screen image of inventory data. The inventory item had been previously assigned the barcode I:3818.

What's in a barcode?

The barcode of an inventory item does not necessarily use the default I:{id} form, some genebanks use UUIDs instead, while others have migrated their existing barcoding system to GGCE. Regardless of the approach, the barcode is unique across all germplasm.

When searching in an inventory list, the inventory barcode can be manually entered in the filter form to locate the desired inventory.

tip

The current version of GGCE allows use of the phone or computer camera to scan the barcodes for filtering!

Adding a barcode

In the following example, the inventory item does not yet have an assigned barcode. Clicking on the Assign barcode button will do so.

Assigning barcode to germplasm

Notice that the form also displays the barcode text (I:3388 in this example) that can be entered manually when a scanner is not conveniently available.
