Using electronic balances

· 2 min read

Accurate data collection is critical for genebank operations. Manual entry can lead to transcription errors and procedural delays.

To improve efficiency and data integrity, GGCE supports Bluetooth-enabled electronic balances. This feature allows you to capture weight measurements directly from your scale into GGCE, reducing manual entry errors and saving time in the field or lab.

How It Works

GGCE uses the Web Bluetooth API to communicate with compatible scales via your web browser. This eliminates the need for additional cables or specialized hardware—you only need a device with Bluetooth capability (such as a tablet, laptop, or smartphone).

Our implementation supports:

  • Kern Electronic Balances: Full support for Kern electronic balances equipped with a Bluetooth KCP module.
  • Standard BLE Scales: Support for various other Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) enabled scales that follow standard GATT service profiles.

Key Features

1. Direct Data Capture

Instead of manual entry, GGCE listens for incoming weight updates from your Bluetooth connection. When you trigger a reading, the measurement is transmitted wirelessly and immediately populated into the correct field in your digital form.

2. Automatic Reconnection

To support busy laboratory or remote field environments, GGCE can remember your "preferred balance." Once you have paired your scale once, the system will attempt to automatically reconnect to it during future sessions.

Getting Started

Using an electronic balance with GGCE is straightforward:

  1. Enable Bluetooth: Ensure Bluetooth is active on your tablet, laptop, or smartphone.
  2. Navigate to a Weight Field: Go to the form where you need to record a weight (for example, in Adjust Quantity).
  3. Select Your Device: In the GGCE interface, click the Balance icon or option. Scan for nearby devices and select your scale from the list.
  4. Capture Weight: Place your sample on the scale, trigger the reading function, and the weight will be recorded automatically.

Tips for Success

  • Balance Compatibility: Ensure your electronic balance supports Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or standard Serial Port Profile (SPP).
  • Browser Compatibility: Use Chrome or Edge, as they support the Web Bluetooth API. Check browser compatibility.
  • Initial Pairing: After you select a scale for the first time, GGCE saves it as your preferred device for future convenience.
  • Proximity: For a stable connection, keep your balance within reasonable range of your mobile device or computer.
